Gasifying fuel bales (1) comprises conveying the bales along a supply path (2, 3) to a charging gate (7), continuously feeding the bales through the gate into a gasification chamber (10), and supplying oxygen to gasify the bales as they enter the gasification chamber. An independent claim is also included for apparatus for gasifying fuel bales, comprising a gasificiation chamber with an inlet for the fuel bales, oxygen lances (8, 9) and a slag discharge system (13-19), where the inlet is a charging gate in the side of the gasification chamber.
