PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain optimum recording power by trial writing when information is recorded to a recond recording layer or a subsequent layer of a multilayer recording medium. SOLUTION: When information is recorded to a recording layer 203 of a second layer counting from the incident side of a light beam and information is already written to a first recording layer 202 which is located at the incident side of the light beam of the recording layer 203, recording is conducted at a portion 202d of the first recording layer 202 located on the same recording surface of a trial writing region 203b prior to trial writing at the trial writing region 203b of the second recording layer 203.
