A gas-generating device (GGD) (1) with a meandering design acts as a reformer for a fuel cell system (2). The GGD has a first mixing chamber (3), into which a gas mixture enters made up of fuel, air and steam. A homogenized mixture is carried into a subsequent first reactor stage (4), e.g. an autothermic reformer.
