The control unit has a central control unit with the electronic control circuits for the individual exterior lights connected via a wired or wireless bus. The control circuits connect the lights to a supply current source in dependence on control signals from the central control unit. The exterior lights have different lamp groupings for different purposes. These are arranged in the vehicle chassis at the front, back, left and right. A control output is provided at least on the control circuit (1) of one of the front light units (2) for a given light (4) of the other, adjacent front light unit (5). The control output (3) is coupled to a switch of the control circuit (6) of the other front light unit. The given lamp (4) controlled via the special control output (3), or the switch, switches the other control circuit (6) at least in the event of failure of the first front light unit (5). The activated given light (4) forms a position lamp which is spaced relative to the lamps of the first front light unit.
