PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a miniaturizable absolute encoder capable of simplifying its structure, reducing the weight, and calibrating automatically an absolute position detection means easily and surely. SOLUTION: This absolute encoder 1 is equipped with magnetic sensors 14, 15 for detecting a magnetic field of a magnetic scale 13, a photosensor 12 for detecting reflected light from a position detection scale 11, and a data control part 70 for determining the relative position of the magnetic sensors 14, 15 to the magnetic scale 13 based on a detection result from the magnetic sensors 14, 15 and the absolute position of a position detection object based on a detection result from the photosensor 12. The absolute encoder 1 is characterized by calibrating automatically data showing the relationship between the position detection object and the absolute position in the data control part 70 based on the detection results from the photosensor 12 and the magnetic sensors 14, 15.
