In a method of attaching an apertured sheet-like member to a sheet of deformable material without destroying the continuity of the sheet, a hollow boss is formed in the sheet, passed through the aperture in the member and compressed to form a bead which spreads over the periphery of the aperture. A tab 28 is attached to the end of a tear-strip 25 formed in the end 22 of a can 20 by forming a dimple 40 in the end 22 (Fig. 4), reforming the dimple to a straightsided boss 36 between dies 48 and 50 (Fig. 6), passing the boss 36 through an aperture 32 in the tab and then impacting the top surface of the boss (Fig. 14) to cause the metal to flow radially outwards and form a bead 36a engaging the periphery of the aperture. During the impacting operation the boss is supported on an anvil 65. The tab is formed with a second aperture 30 (Fig. 10) which creates a line of weakness at which the tab bends upwards to serve as a handle, the aperture 32 is chamfered at 35 (Fig. 11), and there may be a rib 34 formed around the aperture 32. Where the rib is omitted there is no confinement of the metal and the resulting joint is as shown in Fig. 26 where the metal flowing radially outward overlies the upper surface of the tab 126. In a modification (Fig. 23) the impacting punch has a pair of opposed downwardly projecting abutments 170, 172 which partly confine the metal and result in the formation of thickened bars 176 and 178.</p> |
