PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a compact variable power optical system to be used for a digital camera, a portable terminal, a cellular phone or the like to be loaded with the variable power optical system. SOLUTION: The variable power optical system is composed of a lens group containing at least a 1st lens group G11 of positive refractive force, a 2nd lens group G12 of negative refractive force, a 3rd lens group G13 of positive refractive force, and a 4th lens group G14 of positive refractive force which are arranged from the object side in order and moves the 2nd lens group G12 and the 4th lens group G14 along an optical axis when variable power is performed from a wide angle end to a telephoto end, wherein the 1st lens group G11 includes an optical path bending element L11 having refractive force.
