A method and apparatus for detecting relative movement of two system (S, S<SUB>2</SUB>) by using electromagnets induction (B, v, i) on a sensor with a defined magnetic field (B<SUB>m</SUB>) and compensating for the influence of an external interfering magnetic field (B<SUB>s</SUB>) The magnetic field (B<SUB>m</SUB>) is generated in at least two areas (M, M<SUB>2</SUB>) with reversed polarity and a conductor arrangement is designed so that an addition induction effect (i, i<SUB>2</SUB>) occurs on the conductor and the external interfering field (B<SUB>2</SUB>) is corrected by the additive induction effect.
