Disclosed herein is a method for modifying a surface of a polymeric substrat e, comprising providing a substrate, exposing at least one surface of the substrate to energy to form surface radical forming groups on the surface, treating the substrat e with a fluid comprising at least one type of monomer and subjecting the treated substrate to activation energy to cleave at least some of the radical forming groups and initiate graft polymerization of the monomer. The graft polymerization initiated thereby do es not require added photoinitiator.
