PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a control device of an internal combustion engine capable of determining and detecting the fail of a valve timing changing mechanism irrespective of operating conditions. SOLUTION: This control device of an internal combustion engine comprises a second storage means 9B storing the previous stored value of a first storage means 4, a storage value change amount detection means 11 whether or not a change amount from the previous stored value stored in the first storage means 4 to this stored value exceeds a specified value, and a fail determination means 8B. When the change amount is detected to be more than the specified value by the storage value change amount detection means 11, the fail determination means 8B determines the fail of the valve timing change mechanism when the state of a deviation in which a difference between the detected value of an actual valve timing means and the stored value of the second storage means 9B from a target advance-angle amount set by a target advance amount setting means exceeds a specified value for a specified time or longer.
