The fingerprint recording method has the fingerprint structure detected by an electronic imaging unit (2) during a rolling movement of the finger across a recording surface, the obtained image processed to provide an image area enclosed by a figure in the form of a rectangle parallel to the rows and columns of the sensor array of the imaging unit, defining an active pixel region for subsequent images from the sensor array, with assembly of an overall fingerprint image from a series of successive images. An independent claim for an electronic fingerprint recording device is also included.
