[Also in Division F2] A nut, for anchoring in a hole in a sheet, has a projection 12 for forming the hole by piercing the sheet if there is no preformed hole (there being grooves 30 in two opposite sides of the projection 12 for receiving metal displaced by a die from the sheet to anchor the nut) there also being pilot surfaces 25 to fit sides of the hole, if it is preformed in the sheet (so that the nut has merely to be inserted and the corners of the projection 12 staked out and over the sheet by a staking die). There are stop shoulders 15 adjacent the projection 12 for backing the sheet against the action of either die. The nut may be of other polygonal shape than square, e.g. rectangular, and may be made by cutting from a continuous strip and simultaneously punching a hole for tapping. |
