PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reading apparatus capable of making the degree of image density and of edge enhancement fixed, independently of the magnification of the lens in use. SOLUTION: Light of a light source 2 is emitted to a microfilm 1 through the lens 3; a zoom lens 4 collects transmitted light; an image sensor 9 receives the collected transmission light; a magnification detecting section 13 mechanically detects an extending amount of the zoom lens 4 to detect the magnification of the lens; a timing-generating section 15 generates a shift pulse and a drive clock on the basis of the detected lens magnification; an image sensor 9 carries out image data conversion processing for build up a transmission light received by electronic shutter operations by the shift pulse and the drive clock for a prescribed time and converting an image into image data; and an edge emphasis processing section 11 applies edge emphasis processing to the image data, converted into a digital signal on the basis of the detected lens magnification.
