PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an original reading apparatus capable of transferring an original along a transfer path without futility, and shortening a total time required for reading images of both sides of the original. SOLUTION: A step motor is controlled by a control apparatus, and the original is transferred along the transfer path. For the original during being transferred, first, an image in a reading range on its surface is read by an original reading mechanism 13 in a front surface reading position FP on the transfer path, and subsequently, the image of a reading range on the back surface is read by a closed-type image sensor 29 in a back surface reading position BP. The rotation speed of the step motor is controlled by the control apparatus depending on the position of the original on the transfer path, and the original is transferred at a reading moving speed within a predetermined range during reading the front surface or back surface. Also, in a period between immediately after the completion of reading the front surface of the original until immediately after the start of reading the back surface, the original is transferred at a non-reading moving speed higher than the maximum value of the reading moving speed.
