PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enable lighting up of a lighting system in an elevator shaft without using a battery which has limitation in capacity or requires replacement, in an emergency when external electric power is cut off. SOLUTION: The elevator comprises a hoisting machine 2 equipped with an alternating current motor 6, a traction sheave 5, and a braking mechanism 7, and a car 10 suspended in the elevator shaft 1 of a building via a main rope 8 wound about the traction sheave 5 of the hoisting machine 2. In the emergency when supply of external electric power to the hoisting machine 2 is cut off, the braking mechanism 7 of the hoisting machine 2 is manually released to move the car 10 to rotate the traction sheave 5, the lighting system 14 is lighted by a regeneration electric power generated by short-circuiting the phases of the alternating current motor 6 of the hoisting machine 2 by rotation, the periphery of the hoisting machine 2 is brightly shone by the lighting system 14, and the car 10 is moved to a predetermined position while the movement of the main rope 8 is visually recognized from a window 23.
