PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To easily expand a glass pipe to a desired outside diameter with high precision by inhibiting pressure fluctuation independent of operator's skill. SOLUTION: In a diameter expansion method of the glass pipe, a pressurized gas is introduced inside the cylindrical glass pipe G, and the glass pipe G is successively heated from one end toward the other to expand inside and outside diameters of the glass pipe G. Here, a buffer tank 16 that communicates with the glass pipe is installed on the other end of the glass pipe G, and the internal pressure in the buffer tank 16 is adjusted so that it remains constant.
