PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an illumination device with which uniform illuminating light can be obtained, without increasing the lengths of rod integrators or decreasing their cross-sectional areas, and to provide a projector which uses the illuminating device. SOLUTION: The rod integrators 21c, 23c, and 25c for their respective colors each comprise sections 41, 42, and 43 arranged in three stages along the axis. Specifically, since the first section for the first stage extends along the axis and is divided into sixteen first rod members 41a, and the intermediate section 43 for the second stage extends along the axis and is divided into four being third rod members 43a, this enables very uniformized illumination light emitted from the emission portion OP of each of the rod integrators 21c, 23c, and 25c and to be made incident on the effective image area 31f of the liquid crystal light valves 31, 33, and 35 for their respective colors, without degrading the uniformity.
