The ambient lighting device (1) uses a number of light sources, e.g. fluorescent lamps (2,3,4), providing colored light of different wavelengths, their light components mixed together via a control device (8), used for control of the light sources to allow the background light to switch between 2 different colors in a continuous cycle, e.g. a frequency of between 0.5 and 1 Hz.
