984,948. Bearings. MEPAG A.G. April 3, 1963 [Nov. 8, 1962], No. 13209/63. Heading F2A. [Also in Division G1] A self-adjusting bearing unit for the knifeedge of a balance has a bearing-block 1 with two frusto-pyramidal end-portions 2 having mounting faces which are in intersecting planes and which carry flat ground steel or agate plates 3. A plate 4 is mounted by means of balls 5 on each plate 3 and is held in position by spring-members 8 which are slotted at 9 to receive the plate 4. The members 8 are joined together by a piece 10 which may be attached to an end-portion 2 by a screw not shown. Lugs 11 are formed from the spring-members 8, each lug having a hole 12 therein to serve as a cage for a ball 5. Clearance is provided between the balls 5, and the holes 12, so that when a knife 6 is in position and pressure is exerted on the bearing, the balls are free to move away from the contacting sides of the holes 12.
