<p>Problems generated by heat transfer through the vertical dividing wall (2) of a trayed "dividing wall column" (1) and into a downcomer (18) of a tray (3) are mitigated by providing a separate vertical isolation wall (6) between the downcomer (18) and dividing wall (2). The isolation wall (6) forms one side of the downcomer and is spaced a short distance outward from the dividing wall (2) to form an isolation volume which thermally insulates the downcomer from the dividing wall (2). The added wall (6) is parallel to the dividing wall (2) and supplants the dividing wall (2) as a part of the downcomer. It eliminates a need to insulate the dividing wall (2).</p> |
