<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical compensation sheet for optically compensating a liquid crystal cell of a VA (vertically aligned) mode by using only a cellulose acylate film, to provide a polarizing plate with addition of an optical compensation function optimum for a VA mode liquid crystal display, and to provide a VA mode liquid crystal display optically compensated by a cellulose acylate film. <P>SOLUTION: The optical compensation sheet consists of only one sheet of a cellulose acylate film which contains 0.01 to 20 parts by mass of a compound having two or more aromatic rings and a straight molecular structure with respect to 100 parts by mass of cellulose acrylate and which has 20 to 70 nm Re defined by formula (I): Re=(nx-ny)×d, 70 to 400 nm Rth defined by formula (II): Rth=ä(nx+ny)/2-nz}×d, 0.2 to 0.4 ratio of Re/Rth, and 40 to 110 μm film thickness. The polarizing plate and the liquid crystal display use the above sheet. In formula (I) and (II), nx represents a refractive index in the direction of the slow phase axis; ny represents a refractive index in the direction of the fast phase axis; nz represents a refractive index in the thickness direction; and d represents the film thickness. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2005,JPO&NCIPI |
