An LED illumination unit uses a first reflector (204) comprising a reflecting surface (210) formed as a surface of revolution about a first revolution axis (212). The LED (202) emits light about a first LED axis (208) towards the reflecting surface (210) of the first reflector (204). The first LED axis (208) is non-parallel to the first revolution axis (212) and the light emitting area of the first LED unit (202) is positioned substantially at a focus of the reflecting surface (210). The reflector (204) may also have two or more reflecting surfaces for collecting and directing light from two or more respective LEDs.
