PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To optimize the upward/downward slope gear shift control of an automatic transmission of a vehicle wherein an engine is operated in a full-cylinder/cylinder-halted state. SOLUTION: In this controller for the automatic transmission of the vehicle comprising the engine capable of being controlled to be switched between the full-cylinder operation and the cylinder-halted operation, includes a gear shift pattern selecting unit for selecting one of a plurality of gear shift patterns determined in advance in accordance with a degree of upward slope, when an upward slope state is detected, and a gear shift pattern changing unit for changing a shift-up line to a high-speed side with respect to the gear shift pattern selected in the full-cylinder operation state of the engine, in a case when the cylinder-halted operation state is detected. The controller further includes an upward slope gear shift control unit performing the upward slope control on the basis of the gear shift pattern selected by the gear shift pattern selecting unit or the gear shift pattern changed by the gear shift pattern changing unit.
