Oral compositions for administration to poultry via their drinking water comprise a medicament which is one or more of tylosin, 2-amino-5-nitrothiazole, 2-acetylamino-5-introthiazole, and the tetracycline antibiotics, together with sufficient of one or more sulphates of a cation carrying a single positive charge to provide from 0.5 to 50 g. of sulphate ion per gram of medicament. The composition may optionally include a non-toxic carrier. Suitable sulphates are sodium, potassium or ammonium sulphate or bisulphate, trimethyl and dimethyl ammonium sulphate, and sulphuric acid. In use, the quantity of composition used is usually such as to give a concentration of from 0.1 to 1% by weight of sulphate ion in the drinking water, and the composition may be in the form of a package suitable to provide such a concentration. The composition is said to induce increased consumption of the medicament by the poultry, since the sulphate causes a greater intake of drinking water. |
