The projective set of geodetic lines that were parallel to each other on a curved paper surface is extracted from an image obtained by picking up a paper surface with an image pickup device, with what is described on the paper surface as a guide, and the projective set of ruled lines forming a ruled surface equivalent to a curved paper surface is extracted from the projective set of geodetic lines. A curved paper surface is estimated from the projective sets of geodetic lines and ruled lines, and the distortion of an image is corrected based on that curved paper surface. In this way, various kinds of distortion can be handled, and distortion can be corrected even when only part of a paper surface appears in the image.
