摘要 1,057,344. Making boxes; winding. MIDLAND-ROSS CORPORATION. March 12, 1965 [March 30, 1964], No. 10622/65. Headings B3A and B3E. [Also in Divisions B5, B7, B8 and F2] A crate, vehicle body &c. is made from a floor panel, and a three-sided wall and top panel held together by a continuous sheet wound along and between the panels so as to lie wholly outside the floor panel and on both sides of the three-sided wall panel, the layers of the sheet adjacent to the floor panel being bonded together. The construction is such that the crate &c. is heat insulated. A floor panel 60, Fig. 2 (not shown), consists of a steel sheet 61 secured on top of a lipped steel sheet 62 by a foamable resinous liquid composition, the two steel sheets in turn being secured to an honeycomb slab impregnated with a foam resin composition, e.g., of the urethane type, with a sheet of porous paper 67 at its bottom. The floor panel 60 is mounted by suction cups 71, Fig. 1, on one side of a mandrel rotatable about an axis 28 and having corner lugs 8-11. The mandrel is turned anti-clockwise through 90 degrees, Fig. 7 (not shown), so that a vacuum gripper 88 can be manipulated to hold the ends of a number of side-by-side sheets of coiled steel strip 29, 30 against the end of the floor panel 60, which is coated with a thermo-setting adhesive. A heat sealing device 93 is then operated to secure the sheet against the floor panel 60. The mandrel is turned clockwise through about 115 degrees, Fig. 8 (not shown), and the leading edges of further side-by-side steel sheets 24, 25 are similarly secured over the leading edges of the steel sheets 29, 30. The steel sheets 24 &c. are fed from coils 18 and cleaned in baths K, L. The mandrel is then turned on clockwise to the Fig. 7 position again, when webs 37, 38; 48, 49 of fibrous material, doctored between rollers 41, 42; 51, 52 with a liquid adhesive such as an epoxy resin, are fed into the bites between the steel sheets. Movable pressure rollers 44, 55 compress the layers. When the mandrel is enclosed by two wrapped-on laminµ of steel sheets, a wall and roof panel 70 is fed through guide rollers 81 against one side of the mandrel, Fig. 9 (not shown). The wall and roof panel 70, Fig. 4 (not shown), consists of an outer metal sheet 73, an honeycomb filler 74, and three metal sheets 75-77, with wooden wedges 78, 79 at the ends, all bonded together by a liquid resinous adhesive composition. Fibrous web and resin sheets 82, 83 are applied through the guide rollers 81 to the inner side of the wall unit 70. On further rotation of the mandrel, the wall unit 70 is bent to U-shape, Fig. 10 (not shown), enclosed within layers of the steel sheets 24, 25; 29, 30. Finally, the steel sheets are severed by cutters 89, 89a, the heaters 93 are placed against the trailing edge of the sheets, and the crate &c. is removed from the mandrel. An end closure 110, Fig. 6 (not shown), is mounted at one end of the crate &c. and pivoted doors 118, 119 at the other, the frames of these parts being secured to the crate by a liquid epoxy resin. The closure 110 &c. may consist of an honeycomb material sandwiched between metal sheets. Rub rails 121, 122 are welded along the bottom corners of the crate. In a modified construction, the wall unit 70 has its walls and roof separated and strengthened by plate-like corner sections 140, 141, Fig. 16 (not shown), fitting into recesses between the edges of the inner and outer sheet steel laminµ. As a further modification, a chine piece 165, Fig. 20 (not shown), may be provided in the wall unit to abut the floor unit, which may have a wooden board floor 174, its honeycomb material 176 being filled with a rigid foam of a synthetic resin, e.g., polyurethane.
