In a filter comprising a plurality of disc-like filter elements 3 mounted on a hollow shaft which is rotated to remove residue from the elements centrifugally on completion of a filtering cycle, the lowermost element 11 carries a flat ring 13 on to which residue from the upper elements falls and by which it is thrown outwards. The surrounding casing may have a spirally widened portion 4 with a residue outlet 5, or an annular gap closed during filtration by an annular closure but open during rotation for residue removal. During filtering, liquid enters at 6, is filtered by the upper faces of elements 3 and leaves through hollow shaft 2 and outlet 10. Before rotation begins the casing is drained by applying gas pressure to force the liquid through the lowermost element 11 which communicates with outlet 12. Shaft 2 is rotated by motor 7 through gears and a clutch. |
