A protocol handler identifies communication protocol compatible with the host system and adaptively self-configures communication between host interface port which is connectable to media access control (MAC) interface of hose system and to optical fiber communication medium, in accordance with the identified compatible communication protocol. An independent claim is also included for communication method.
