摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for manufacturing an impact resistant polyphenylene ether superior in impact resistance without spoiling other properties besides the impact resistance. SOLUTION: This method for manufacturing the impact resistant polyphenylene ether comprises an occlusion step of allowing a rubbery polymer, which has a gel content of 40-98 % by mass and an average particle size of 100-550 nm, to occlude a monomer mixture containing a vinyl cyanide compound of 0-18 % by mass and an aromatic vinyl compound at 40-80°C for 15-90 min, a polymerization step of making an impact resistant reinforcing material by graft polymerization of the monomer mixture of 70-20 parts by mass to the rubbery polymer of 30-80 parts by mass (in terms of a solid content) so that a mass average molecular weight of a grafted section becomes 50,000-200,000, using an oil-soluble pyrolytic initiator the 10 hr half-life temperature of which is 30-90°C, and a mixing step of mixing the impact resistant reinforcing material with the polyphenylene ether.
