PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus for performing an automatic background removal function in an automatic document feeder (ADF) mode wherein a document is moved without moving a light source and an image of the document is read out. SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus includes: a first movement unit to move a document loaded in a document tray in a reading direction; a light source carriage to accommodate the light source and to read an image of the document; a second movement unit to move the light source carriage to a first position or to a second position; an image processing part to process the image of the document to generate predetermined image data; and a control part to control the image processing part to process an image of a specific portion of the document read out by the light source carriage fixed at the first position and to process an entire image of the document read out by the light source carriage fixed at the second position in use of a predetermined contrast equalization pattern selected based on an image processing result of the specific portion of the document.
