Producing aqueous copolymer dispersions with a water content of 30-99.5 wt.% comprises radical copolymerization of an ethylenically unsaturated dicarboxylic acid anhydride having 4-8 carbon atoms, an oligomer of an alkene having 3-10 carbon atoms and optionally an ethylenically unsaturated comonomer, optionally reacting the product with an alkoxylated alcohol (Ia) or alkoxylated amine (Ib), and adding water. Producing aqueous copolymer dispersions with a water content of 30-99.5 wt.% comprises radical copolymerization of an ethylenically unsaturated dicarboxylic acid anhydride having 4-8 carbon atoms, an oligomer of an alkene having 3-10 carbon atoms, where the oligomer has a molecular weight of 300-5000 or is produced by oligomerising at least 3 equivalents of the alkene, and optionally an ethylenically unsaturated comonomer, optionally reacting the product with an alkoxylated alcohol of formula (Ia) or alkoxylated amine of formula (Ib), and adding water.
