<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide semiconductor ultrafine particles, to provide a method for producing the same, to provide a new material of a fluorescent substance, containing the semiconductor ultrafine particles, and to provide an optical device, such as a display device and an illuminating device, having high luminance, by using the material of the fluorescent substance. <P>SOLUTION: The semiconductor ultrafine particles maintain a luminous efficiency of photoluminescence of ≥50%, when the particles are dispersed in water and kept in an open atmospheric environment at 10-20°C for 5 days, wherein the particles preferably comprise Group-2/Group-6 semiconductor ultrafine particles and are produced by introducing a gaseous compound of a Group 6 element (e.g., Te) into an aqueous alkaline solution in which a water-soluble compound containing a Group 2 element (e.g., Cd) and a surfactant are dissolved. The fluorescent substance is obtained by dispersing the semiconductor ultrafine particles in a glass matrix which is formed by a sol-gel process. The fluorescent substance thus obtained has the high luminance, is excellent in light resistance and stability with time, and is used for a display element with the high luminance, etc., of the display device. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2005,JPO&NCIPI |
