PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a swash plate type hydraulic pump motor for largely securing the practical volume ratio still in a small type. SOLUTION: This swash plate type hydraulic pump motor has first and second swash plates 30 and 40 for oppositely reciprocating first and second pistons 8 and 9 so as to expand and contract a volume chamber 10 in response to rotation of a cylinder block 4, first and second swash plate bearings 32 and 42 for tiltably supporting the first and second swash plates 30 and 40, a port plate 60 for rotating together with the cylinder block 4 by slidingly contacting with a shoe 21 and the first swash plate 30, a bearing through-port opening in the first swash plate bearing 32, a supply discharge port opening in the first swash plate 30, and communicating with this bearing through-port 53, a valve port 64 opening in the port plate 60, and intermittently communicating with this supply discharge port 37, and a shoe port 19 for communicating this valve port 64 with the volume chamber 10 by penetrating through the shoe 21.
