PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a substrate which is used for growing a magnetic garnet single crystal film and can prevent the occurrence of single crystal cracks in growing the film; and a method for producing a magnetic garnet single crystal film by using the substrate. SOLUTION: The substrate, used in growing a magnetic garnet single crystal film, is made so that it has a thickness t of 500μm or more and an extinction ratio (a) larger than 45 dB and satisfies the relation between thickness t (μm) and extinction ratio (a) (dB), represented by a>0.00429t+42.84.
