PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a hydraulic shock absorber, preventing hydraulic fluid staying in a gap between the inner periphery of a sub-tank and an inner cap from oozing out through the outer peripheral gap of an outer cap and also preventing the outer cap from jumping out. SOLUTION: In this hydraulic shock absorber 10, an outer peripheral sealing part 53A closely adhering to the inner periphery of the sub-tank 20 and an annular elastic body 51 provided with an oil scavenging groove 55 formed extending from the outer peripheral side to the end face opposite to the inner cap 23 to the inner peripheral side are fitted to the inner periphery of the outer cap 29, and the annular elastic body 51 is held between the inner cap 23 and the outer cap 29. Hydraulic fluid staying between the outer periphery of the inner cap 23 and the inner periphery of the sub-tank 20 is recovered in the outer cap 29 through the oil scavenging groove 55, and a communicating passage 56 communicating a space A formed between the outer cap 29 and the inner cap 23 with the outside through a gap B formed between the outer cap 29 and the inner periphery of an opening part 21 of the sub-tank 20 is formed in the outer peripheral surface of a part fitted to the inner periphery of the outer cap 29 in the annular elastic body 51.
