Acrolein and methacrolein or acrylonitrile and methacrylonitrile are made by oxidation or ammoxidation in the vapour phase of propylene and isobutene at elevated temperature over an oxide composition containing Sb, Sn and U. The reaction may be effected over a fixed or fluidized bed of catalyst using steam as a gaseous diluent if desired. The catalyst may be supported on pumice, SiO2, SiC or TiO2.ALSO:Oxidation catalysts comprise mixed oxides of Sb, Su and U They may be supported on pumice SiO2, SiC or TiO2. A variety of preparations is given.
