TWO-DIMENSIONAL PHOTONIC CRYSTAL SLAB AND TWO-DIMENSIONAL PHOTONIC CRYSTAL WAVEGUIDE

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a low-loss two-dimensional photonic crystal waveguide that has a two-dimensional photonic crystal slab having a photonic band gap common to a light beam in the TE-like mode and a light beam in the TM-like mode and preventing a light beam from leaking to the inward direction of the slab material. SOLUTION: A two-dimensional photonic crystal slab 10a is provided with a photonic band gap common to a light beam in the TE-like mode and a light beam in the TM-like mode and low refractive index material area 15 having a triangular prism shapes arranged in the slab material made of a high refractive index material in a triangule lattice pattern. A linear defect section 22 disordering a periodic arrangement of a photonic crystal is formed in the Gamma-J direction. The linear defect section 22 is made the waveguide section 22 through which light beams in the TE-like mode and light beams in the TM-like mode can be transmitted.
