<p>A process for the production of para-aminophenol comprises reducing nitrobenzene with] hydrogen in an aqueous heterogeneous system at a temperature of from 60 DEG to 120 DEG C. in the presence of from 5 to 20% by weight of sulphuric acid and a catalyst comprising platinum metal and/or palladium metal to obtain a reaction product comprising an aqueous layer containing para-aminophenol and an organic layer containing sufficient nitrobenzene to keep the catalyst suspended therein and separating the organic layer from the aqueous layer. A wetting agent, e.g. a quaternary ammonium salt, may be present in the reaction mixture. Examples are furnished. The process may be carried out continuously or batchwise.</p> |
