An image display apparatus having a karaoke function and a controlling method thereof are provided to separate into an accompaniment control mode and a singer control mode if a user selects a karaoke mode by receiving accompaniment information, singer information, and caption information from a received digital stream, thereby realizing a karaoke function desired by the user. A key input unit(101) inputs various request commands and karaoke on/off functions desired by a user. When the user selects the karaoke on function, a microcomputer(109) receives accompaniment volume information and singer volume information from additional information separated through a demultiplexer(103), and controls such that each volume can be selectively varied/outputted through a speaker(107). A voice signal processor(106) varies an accompaniment volume and a singer volume according to a control signal of the microcomputer(109), and processes to output the varied volumes through the speaker(107). An image signal processor(104) extracts caption information from the additional information, so that an image and words of a song can be simultaneously outputted.
