The apparatus holds at least one exhaust gas cleaning element (10) in an exhaust gas deflector attached inside a cylinder head of a multiple cylinder combustion engine. The apparatus has a holder plate (11) to which the cleaning element is fastened. A base part (13) is arranged between the holder plate and the cylinder head. The base part and the holder plate define a space (14) formed such that the gas emissions from all cylinders of the engine flow through it. Independent claims also cover an exhaust gas deflector, a combustion engine and a gas regeneration method.
