PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a disk discrimination method for easily and reliably determining a disk even when the output level of a pickup varies, and a disk playback device using the same. SOLUTION: A disk playback device 100 which is capable of playing back high and low reflection disks includes: a pickup 4 having a light source 2 and a photodetector 3; a comparison means 15 for comparing the pickup output level outputted from the pickup 4 with a disk determination threshold value; and a determination means 16 for determining the type of a disk on the basis of the comparison result of the comparison means 15. The comparison means 15 compares the pickup output level with a predetermined pickup output range, and a system control microcomputer 18 having a disk determination threshold value changing function for changing a predetermined disk determination threshold value according to the result of the comparison means 15 is provided.
