PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent a tamper from obstructing sheets when the sheets fed are stacked on a stack in a compiler having the tamper for aligning the fed sheets by tamping the sheets from the side of the sheet stack. SOLUTION: In a tamper system 30 in the lateral direction for tamping the sheets 11 from the side, the height of the sheet stack to be compiled is measured by a stack height sensor 20, and the uppermost part of the tamper system is driven so as to be held above the uppermost part of the stack according to the rise of the height. At the beginning of the stack, tamper system is lowered. A sheet supply position, i.e., the position of a nip 14 is also raised and lowered according to the height of the stack.
