PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a slim zoom lens which is suitable for a video camera and a digital still camera, has high magnification, and is compact and inexpensive. SOLUTION: The zoom lens is successively provided with a first lens group 1 having positive refractive power and a second lens group 2 having negative refractive power in the order from the object side to the image surface side. A function, that is used to vary magnification, is accomplished by changing the relative distance between the first lens group 1 and the second lens group 2. The first lens group 1 has a meniscus lens 10. The meniscus lens 10 is formed into an oval shape in which one tip part along the longitudinal direction of a laterally long image to be obtained and the other tip part are respectively cut.
