The level of oil is maintained constant in an oil-sump by means of oil supplied from a closed reservoir disposed above the oil-sump; a passage, having a valve therein, connecting the oilsump to the reservoir, said valve being urged to close the passage. On opening the valve, lubricant flows from the reservoir until the lubricant in the casing reaches a pre-determined level at which air can no longer pass from the casing into the reservoir and flow of lubricant from the closed reservoir is thereby prevented. Part of the reservoir may be transparent to enable the surface of the lubricant to be viewed and the valve may be manually-actuated. In an embodiment, a lawn-mower has a closed reservoir L mounted on its crankcase 10, the lower part of which serves as the oil-sump. The reservoir L is connected to the oil-sump through an inclined bore 21a and a vertical bore 23a, the bore 21a being closed by a valve 29 which is urged against a seat 30 by a spring 36, the latter abutting a knob 34 which is attached to the valve 29 by a stem 31. When the knob 34 is pressed, the valve 29 opens and oil flows from the reservoir L to the oil-sump. Air bubbles, which may be observed through a window 19a in a cap 19 of the reservoir, denote the flowing of oil. When the bubbles cease, pressure is released from the knob 34 to allow the valve 29 to close.</p> |
