An apparatus and method for transmitting a wakeup channel for state transition between modes in a sleeping state of a broadband wireless communication system are provided to support an operation of transition from a sleep mode to an awake mode or from the awake mode to the sleep mode. A terminal receives position information of a WUI(Wake-Up channel Indicator) for the terminal itself from a base station in an awake mode(601). If there is no data to be transmitted to or received from the base station, the terminal is transited to a sleep mode(605) and periodically receives a DL-BCCH(Downlink-Broadcast Channel)(605). If the position of a frame and a slot of a received channel signal is identical to the position of the WUI previously allocated from the base station(607), the terminal is transited to an awake mode(609) and reads DL-WUCH(Downlink Wake Up Channel) information(611). If the WUI indicates ON, the terminal is transited to the awake mode(615) and reads a received DL-BCCH(617).
