Methods are disclosed for treating an immune pathology in an individual, comprising administering to said individual an effective amount of a high mobility group box protein (HMGB) polypeptide comprising a vertebrate HMGB A box, a non-naturally occurring HMGB A box, or an immunosuppressive fragment of said vertebrate HMGB1 A box or non-naturally HMGB1 A box.
