In a leakproof cell with a thickened electrolyte there is inserted, between the negative electrode and the depolarizer, a barrier layer consisting of or containing granules bonded together of a cation exchange resin of substantial swelling capacity, having a particle size not greater than 200 Á and being capable of absorbing at least 3 times its own dry weight of water. The ion exchange resin may be polystyrenesulphonic acid cross-linked with divinylbenzene, or a sulphonated phenol-aldehyde resin. The barrier layer may be produced inside a zinc beaker by applying a suspension of cationexchange particles in a binding agent solution and removing solvent. A cell is made by coating the inside of a zinc beaker with a solution of polyisobutylene, or other binding agent, in acetone, scattering polystyrenesulphonic acid particles on the coating, drying the coating, covering the base with an insulating layer, and inserting a carbon rod and depolarizer mix comprising MnO 2 , carbon black, ZnCl 2 solution, ZnO and Karaya gum. |
