Detergent compositions comprise a polyvalent metal salt (neutral or basic) of an a -sulpho carboxylic ester or amide of formula where R is C4-20 alkyl, Y is C:O.O or C:O.NH, and X is C1-6 alkyl, -CH2CH(OH)CH2OH, -CH2CH(OH)CH2O(C1-6 alkyl) or (C2-4 alkyleneoxy)n-H, where n is an integer from 1 to 10, the total number of carbon atoms in R and in any C-C chain in X being 8 to 24. Salts derived from metals of Groups II to VIII are disclosed, typical ones being neutral and basic calcium methyl a -sulphomyristate and zinc N-glyceryl a -sulphopalmitamide. Other ingredients such as alkaline builders, N-alkylol fatty acid amides, amine oxides, alkali metal and amine salt of the above sulpho compounds, soap, sodium sulphate, oxyalkylated alkyl phenols and thiophenols or salts of sulphated derivatives thereof, metal alkaryl sulphonates, chelating agents and carboxymethylcellulose may be present. Solid and liquid compositions, e.g. in water/ethanol are described as are a drycleaning compositions containing also organic ammonium salts of sulphated alkylphenol/alkylene oxide condensates. The barium salts of the above a -sulpho compounds may be added to high temperature lubricants and the aluminium salts used in gelling fuels such as mineral spirits or gasoline.ALSO:The invention comprises polyvalent metal salts (both neutral and basic) of a -sulpho carboxylic ester or amide of formula where R is C4- 20 alkyl, Y is C:O.O or C:O.NH and X is C1- 6 alkyl, -CH2CH(OH)CH2OH, -CH2CH(OH)CH2O (C1- 6 alkyl) or (C2- 4 alkyleneoxy)n-H, wherein n is an integer from 1 to 10, the total number of carbon atoms in R and in any C-C chain in X being 8 to 24. Many salts derived from metals of Groups II to VIII are described. They are prepared by various neutralization tranesterification oxyalkylation. Products are useful as detergents, medicinals, pesticides, antiseptics and paint dryers.
