[Also in Divisions F1 and H2] A pump driven by a magnetic coupling has pressurized liquid used to counterbalance the attractive force between the elements of the coupling. The pump body 10 has a central portion 17 supporting a bearing 18 for shaft 21 which carries an impeller 22 at one end and a magnetic disc 27 at the other end. A sealing non-magnetic membrane 12 lies between disc 27 and the driven disc 33 of the magnetic coupling. In operation, motor 35 drives disc 33 and thereby rotates disc 27 and impeller 22 to draw liquid through inlet 25 and expel it through output 26. Pressurized liquid is bled through bore 38 into chamber 16 from where it flows through helical groove 39 in shaft 21 and exhausts through notches 46 in washer 24 into the impeller chamber. Pressure builds up on washer 24 to counterbalance the attractive forces produced by the magnet discs. |
