PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a high-pressure discharge lamp lighting device capable of controlling a DC voltage output of a controllable DC power supply with a high degree of accuracy and determining a life time, and to provide a lighting system using it. SOLUTION: This high-pressure discharge lamp lighting device is provided with the controllable DC power supply CDC, a full bridge type inverter HINV converting a DC voltage outputted by the controllable DC power supply CDC into an AC voltage, a high-pressure discharge lamp HPDL energized by the application of the AC voltage outputted by the full bridge type inverter HINV to light, and a control means CC controlling the output of the controllable DC power supply CDC by sampling at least one of the lamp voltage and a lamp current of the high-pressure discharge lamp HPDL in lighting including a transient-phenomenon part at the time of the reversal of polarity for generating a control signal to provide the controllable DC power supply CDC.
